MAN
ON A WIRE (R) -Coming to VILLAGE 8 September 12
LOUISVILLE
EXCLUSIVE
On
August 7, 1974 a young Frenchman named Philippe Petit stepped
out on a wire illegally rigged between New York's Twin Towers,
then the world's tallest buildings. After nearly an hour
dancing on the wire, he was arrested, taken for psychological
evaluation and brought to jail. Petit spent eight months in
New York planning the execution of the coup. Aided by a team
of friends and accomplices, he had to find a way to bypass the
World Trade Center's security; smuggle the heavy steel cable
and rigging equipment into the towers; pass the wire between
the two rooftops; anchor the wire and tension it to withstand
the winds and the swaying of the buildings. The rigging was
done by night in complete secrecy. At 7:15 AM, Philippe took
his first step on the high wire 1,350 feet above the sidewalks
of Manhattan. James Marsh's documentary brings Petit's
extraordinary adventure to life through the testimony of
Philippe himself, and some of the co-conspirators who helped
him create the unique and magnificent spectacle that became
known as "the artistic crime of the century." Music
by Michael Nyman.

THE
WOMEN (PG13) -Coming to BAXTER September 12
What happens when you combine a brilliant, all-female,
all-star cast; celebrated comedy writer/director/producer
Diane English ("Murphy Brown"); and a classic story
about a circle of New York friends? The answer is a smart,
sparkling comedy about contemporary womanhood and the power of
female relationships. Based on George Cukor's 1939 film and
Clare Boothe Luce's 1936 stage play, The Women whisks
us into a busy pocket of Manhattan society, where the
publishing, fashion and finance industries play. At the center
of the tale is Mary Haines (Meg Ryan), a thoroughly modern
woman suddenly confronted with an age-old dilemma: a cheating
husband. The ladies in her life swiftly rally to Mary's side,
led by her best friend Sylvie Fowler (Annette Bening), a
dynamic magazine editor. But when Sylvie betrays Mary in a
Faustian bargain, the entire group is shaken to the core. Like
its predecessors, The Women unfolds in an entirely
female world; men are richly portrayed, but are never seen
onscreen. Co-starring Eva Mendes, Debra Messing, Jada Pinkett
Smith, Candice Bergen, Bette Midler, Cloris Leachman, Carrie
Fisher and Debi Mazar.

BURN AFTER READING (R) -Coming to BAXTER September 12
The new crime comedy from Academy Award-winning writers and
directors Joel and Ethan Coen (Fargo, No Country for Old
Men) stars John Malkovich as a recently ousted CIA
official who returns to his Georgetown home to work on his
memoirs and his drinking, though not necessarily in that
order. His wife (Tilda Swinton)—dismayed but not
particularly surprised—is well into an illicit affair with a
married federal marshal (George Clooney). Elsewhere in the
Washington, D.C. suburbs, fitness center employee Linda
(Frances McDormand) can barely concentrate on her work. She is
consumed with her life plan for extensive cosmetic surgery,
and confides her mission to can-do colleague Chad (Brad Pitt).
When a computer disc containing material for the CIA analyst's
memoirs accidentally falls into the hands of Linda and Chad,
the duo are intent on exploiting their find. As the gym's
manager (Richard Jenkins) frets "No good can come of
this," events spiral out of everyone's and anyone's
control in a cascading series of darkly hilarious encounters.

THE
ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW (R)
Next Showing September 27 at MIDNIGHT AT BAXTER
The longest-running midnight movie of all time stars Tim Curry
as the kinky yet endearing “transsexual from Transylvania” Dr.
Frank N. Furter, Susan Sarandon and Barry Bostwick as his
hapless guests Brad and Janet, Meat Loaf as motorcycle-riding
rough trade and author Richard O’Brien as the hunchbacked butler
Riff Raff. It’s harmless musical fun—a delightful spoof of
Hollywood horror movies and Old Dark House melodramas. All of
our engagements feature live casts who perform scenes during the
movie, and the audience is always welcome to respond to the
on-screen action. The Rocky Horror Picture was the first—and is
still the best—interactive movie experience! |
